Bill of Quantities (BOQ)

Definition

A Bill of Quantities (BOQ) is a document prepared by a quantity surveyor that lists, in detail, the materials, parts, and labour required to complete a construction project. Each item is measured in appropriate units (square metres, linear metres, tonnes, or hours) and provides the basis for subcontractors and contractors to price the work consistently.

In construction tendering, this means...

A BOQ is one of the most important tendering documents in construction. When a BOQ is available, subcontractors can price against the same measured quantities, making received bids directly comparable. Without a BOQ, each sub measures up independently, leading to significant variation in what is and isn't included in each price.
